Ubuntu coming soon to Snapdragon X2 Series platforms, unlocking more Linux PCs for the agentic world

Canonical and Qualcomm Technologies announce upcoming native Ubuntu support for Qualcomm’s flagship laptop silicon, delivering multi-day battery life, 80 TOPS NPU acceleration, and seamless cloud-to-edge agentic AI capabilities for developers and enterprises.

London, UK – September 23, 2026 – Canonical and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. announced a big step in the evolution of Linux personal computing: official Ubuntu support on the Snapdragon® X2 Series platforms, targeted for release in 2027. Bringing the most widely used Linux distribution to high-performance laptops powered by Snapdragon will provide developers with an integrated hardware and software environment required to build and execute agentic AI locally.

Strengthening the laptops powered by Snapdragon with Ubuntu

By delivering a fully optimized, certified Ubuntu image for Snapdragon X2 Series platforms, Canonical will bring enterprise-grade reliability and software agility directly to these laptops:

• Turnkey developer and OEM readiness: Canonical provides standardized, certified OS images that have been rigorously validated on Snapdragon X2 silicon, giving developers a seamless, out-of-the-box experience without manual kernel tweaks or driver integration.
• High-performance AI and compute power: Snapdragon X2 Series platforms feature up to 18 Qualcomm Oryon™ cores at up to 5.0 GHz, a dedicated NPU delivering up to 80 TOPS of performance and high-bandwidth LPDDR5x memory (up to 228 GB/s, 48 GB capacity). With Ubuntu, developers gain native, hardware-accelerated access to the full ecosystem of open-source AI tools and MLOps platforms.
• Hybrid data center to laptop workflows: AI models developed, fine-tuned, and deployed on Linux in cloud data centers can now be migrated natively and frictionlessly onto Linux laptops powered by Snapdragon X2 Series.
• Enterprise security and connectivity: Chip-to-cloud security powered by the Qualcomm® Secure Processing Unit (SPU), Wi-Fi 7, and optional 5G connectivity.
• Aligned hardware and software lifecycles: Enterprise deployments gain long-term operational predictability from certified OS images, with up to 15 years of security maintenance, kernel livepatching, and compliance coverage (FIPS, DISA-STIG) through Ubuntu Pro.
• Centralized fleet and security management: Enterprise IT teams can seamlessly deploy, monitor, and update Linux laptops powered by Snapdragon at scale using Landscape, Canonical’s management and automation platform.

Availability
